Hello everyone!

I am currently helping out at Anikst design for the next month and a half, where I’m learning a lot about making/ designing books, which is great!

Before that, I was given the opportunity to teach for a day at an art college in Stockport, near Manchester. Lucy Brown, who used to teach us in typo and who is now a full time tutor at that college, invited me to hold a day-long typography workshop with the second year illustration students.

Frankly, I was a little nervous about this, as I have never stood before a class. Everything went well though, the teaching staff at Stockport, as the students were all so very kind and friendly, I felt at ease the whole day through.

For the workshop, I had them design a typeface each by making them experience a very intuitive and spontaneous process. During a first part, they were given very quick paced five minutes workshops, where they were asked to put on to paper anything that came remotely close to a word i’d chosen. After that, we put to the walls all the ideas they had had during the first part. These visual ideas became the inspiration for their typeface design. ImageImageImage

fun and playful typefaces!

It was a great experience! Everyone seemed to be motivated to participate, the atmosphere was really relaxed and friendly. I enjoyed this day a lot!

I hope you all are having a great time!

So Long,

Sophie

Hello everyone!

Uh, it seems like ages that i haven’t been writing in here. I have  a bit of free time just now, as I’m at the office and there is no job in for me to do… so I thought I’d post.

Here are the news: I was supposed to go to intern at Black Dog Publishing, but they seem to have a busy time and they postponed it, and now I’m not sure I’m going to go there at all, as all plans changed since.  I am working at the Financial Times now, (well, interning), and it’s a great experience to see what such a big newspaper looks like inside. I’m in the “How to Spend it” section, which is a luxury/lifestyle magazine that comes out almost every month.

I used the free time I got in the break to travel to Paris, see a bit of culture and enjoy nice food.

I also met up with the guys from Birch, and I will be designing an identity for a hairdresser friend of theirs – a really nice person, as I met her yesterday- for them, and they will be giving me feedback and supervise my progress. I started working on it, and it’s all good fun. I realize I really enjoy doing this, that’s a great feeling.

After the FT (which is 1 month), I will be assisting Michael Anikst and his assistant in Hampstead for a while. I’m really looking forward to that, as he seems to be full of wisdom and skill.

Also, I’m really busy looking for a new house to live in – so if anyone knows someone who looks for a housemate, or looks for one themselves, please don’t hesitate to contact me!!

That’s all for today, I can tell you guys are having a good time, so keep your health and have fun!

All the best,

Sophie

Hi guys!!!

Here’s a pretty late update on what I’ve been doing lately! I don’t know where to start, ah-

After Typo London, I started applying to various places, and got interviews at Black Dog Publishing (which I got) and with Simon Esterson (who is the creative director of eye magazine). It all went pretty well, as I am going to work for Black Dog from january, and Simon told me to contact him after that…

I also did a few illustrations for the 26stories project, and although they won’t be published, they were really fun to make, and allowed me to get in contact with both writers and graphic designer behind the project. They were really nice and helpful- one of them, Rob Self-Pierson, even asked me to do an illustration for a shortstory he is writing for a newspaper in Cornwall.

Also, I worked with my friends from France (our name is Viele Stück, check us out! ;) )on a diary/calendar/planner for the next year, which is getting printed now. They are small (14x9cm), bound booklets that are meant to be useful helpers!

Here’s the cover design, as a spoiler (the content is a surprise, but be assured, it’s filled with funny stories and surprising visuals about science! It was great fun to make!)

We are going to sell them for 10 pounds each, do let me know if you guys are interested to get one?

Also, i did little bits and bobs here and there- volunteered at the Read Out Lout event at the V&A, and during a day in Visual Editions Pop Up Store at Vitsoe (a designer store in Marleybone) :

Also, at the moment, I am doing a mini-internship at Birch. it’s great, we get along well and the work is fun, im working on a storyboard for a film that will figure on their latest website project.

So, basically, I’m tying to find time to look into personal projects and things, but at the moment, I can’t seem to be able to… hopefully Christmas holidays at home will be a chill down and great time to catch up on more personal stuff… let’s see!

I hope you are all well,

I’ll try and keep you posted from time to time!

Have a merry christmas and a happy new year!!

xx

typo london

Just found this picture of Typo London, and thought it’s a funny one to add. That’s Dom and a friend and co-worker (I can’t remember his name now) and inbetween, that shape in the corridor, is Adrian Shaughnessy walking out of the Speaker’s Room.

typo london foodJack and Dom, represent our daily activity quite well. At the end of the day, we’d get the left over nice sandwiches from the Speaker’s room, and during talks we could read and look into Typo magazines.

Hello guys!

Since the end of term, time has passed so fast and it’s been really busy for me!
First, we had our little exhibiton in Brick Lane, Typofactory. setting up

After that, I started my two weeks internship at the Brand Union.
It’s been very interesting so far. I never knew much about branding and advertising, and this past week certainly gave me a new insight into the matter.
I’ve been around the studio (which, despite being quite large, is really comfortable and friendly!), watching and being involved in a project on the rebranding of a russian cigarette brand for women (LOADS of pink, glitter and flowers, for a brand called “Glamour”!)- which is actually quite fun to do!

(I don’t have any photographs of the studio yet, I should take some!!)

Surprisingly, even though Brand Union is a large company, they are really used to having interns around and treat us kindly. They try to involve us as much as possible into a ange of diverse activities, so that we get an insight into the studio’s funcioning.

I’m looking forward to my second (and last) week at the Union!

See you!

Sophie
